A band was forming, had a gig coming up, one guy (not me) had a banjo, but no one knew how to play it. The only reason I play banjo today, is because of my open tuned guitar experience. I think it's easier, and more versitile especially with long fingers and using thumbovers. ![]() I loved it the second I tried it many years ago, and relearned all my chords, and never went back to standard tuning. And as mentioned, if you get into blues, slide blues, electric rock blues etc, open tunings are extreamly popular. It's actually the simpelest way to make simple music on a guitar in only a matter of minutes. If you get to watching music videos, especially rock, you'll see it a lot. I've also seen Dolly Parton use open G tuning, with her long fingernails, so that she only had to barr the neck to make chords. He's made a lot of money and came up with a lot of popular riffs that way, that's for sure. so he took it off, and plays with only 5 strings. One of the best examples of open tuning on the planet is Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones who's Telecaster is tuned to open G and he didn't like the low D string. In fact, other than chord recognition of other players, I don't use standard tuning at all anymore. I've been tuning my guitars to open G and open D longer than I played standard. ![]() open G is less tension and is actually better on your guitar and it's neck.
